Maryland Introduces Butterfly Symbol on IDs to Recognize Hidden Disabilities

Maryland is marking a milestone in inclusivity by offering a voluntary butterfly symbol on driver’s licenses and IDs, enabling residents to discreetly indicate hidden disabilities such as autism, PTSD, or hearing loss.

The effort, called Eric’s ID Law, was inspired by Silver Spring’s Eric Carpenter-Grantham and his mother, Linda, who advocated for safer, more respectful law enforcement interactions after the 2020 death of George Floyd.

With collaboration from Senator Will Smith and Delegate Jheanelle Wilkins, the law passed and takes effect October 1, 2025.

The butterfly symbol appears discreetly on IDs and is free, with no medical proof needed, and can be added or removed online or in person.

Meanwhile, crime in downtown Silver Spring dropped 7.6% over the last year, with no shootings and a notable dip in robberies, though youth crime remains a challenge.

A local resident also recently won $50,000 in Powerball, showing the ongoing vibrancy and resilience of the community.

Maryland's First Snowfall of the Season Brings Wintry Charm and Caution

Maryland residents woke Sunday to a blanket of fresh snow, marking the first significant snowfall of the season.

The National Weather Service issued a Winter Weather Advisory, predicting 1 to 3 inches of accumulation, with northern counties like Frederick, Carroll, Baltimore, and Harford seeing up to 5 inches.

In Baltimore, early morning flakes led to about 2 inches by mid-morning as city crews cleared main roads, though caution was urged on untreated streets.

Towson and Columbia saw similar totals, prompting late openings for shops and cafes and delays for area schools.

Travelers at Baltimore-Washington International faced minor flight delays while public transit operated on adjusted schedules.

With temperatures hovering near freezing, families gathered at local parks for sledding and snowman-building.

The cold Arctic air is forecasted to linger, and officials remind everyone to stay informed and prepared as winter advances.
