Maryland Introduces Butterfly Symbol on IDs to Recognize Hidden Disabilities

New Initiative Aims to Enhance Safety and Understanding for Individuals with Non-Apparent Disabilities

Maryland has taken a significant step toward inclusivity by introducing a butterfly symbol on state-issued driver's licenses and identification cards, allowing individuals to voluntarily disclose hidden disabilities.

This initiative, known as Eric's ID Law, was inspired by Eric Carpenter-Grantham, a 20-year-old from Silver Spring who lives with high-functioning autism.

After the tragic death of George Floyd in 2020, Eric and his mother, Linda Carpenter-Grantham, sought ways to improve interactions between law enforcement and individuals with non-apparent disabilities.

They envisioned a system where such disabilities could be discreetly indicated on identification documents to alert first responders.

Collaborating with Maryland legislators, including Senator Will Smith and Delegate Jheanelle Wilkins, the Carpenter-Granthams championed the passage of this law.

Enacted on October 1, 2025, the law allows residents to add a butterfly symbol to their IDs, signaling conditions like autism, PTSD, or hearing impairments.

The process is entirely voluntary and free of charge, with no requirement for medical documentation.

Maryland Transportation Acting Secretary Samantha J. Biddle emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, "Not every disability is visible, and this is an easy, free way to communicate with residents and first responders."

The butterfly symbol is positioned on the front of the ID, similar to organ donor or veteran indicators, ensuring privacy while providing crucial information during emergencies.

Residents can update their designation through their online myMVA account, self-service kiosks, or in-person at MVA branches.

While adding or removing the butterfly is free, standard fees apply for unrelated transactions, such as license renewals.

For families like the Carpenter-Granthams, the butterfly symbol represents more than a design update—it signifies recognition, dignity, and hope.

As Montgomery County Councilmember Will Jawando put it: "This symbol isn't just ink on a card; it's a promise that in a moment of crisis, a first responder will see not just a person, but a person's story."

More information on how to apply for the butterfly designation is available on the Maryland MVA website.

In related local news, downtown Silver Spring has experienced a notable decrease in crime rates.

According to recent reports, overall crime in the area dropped by 7.6% over the past year.

Robberies declined by 30%, and there were no reported contact shootings or homicides in the first quarter of 2025.

However, juvenile crime remains a concern, with high numbers of youths involved in carjackings and auto thefts.

Additionally, a Silver Spring resident recently won $50,000 in the Powerball lottery, narrowly missing the $930 million jackpot.

The winning ticket was sold at the Columbia Road Exxon in Montgomery County.

These developments highlight the dynamic nature of the Silver Spring community, showcasing both progress and ongoing challenges.
